At the moment many of our gun owners (most especially the criminal elements) are neither "well regulated" nor a member of any "militia" Fond regards, George The language used in the second amendment should be interpreted as it was meant in the 19th century when it was written. "Well regulated" means properly armed and equipped, as in the "Regular" Army. The "militia" was, by law, every able bodied man between 17 and 45 years of age. The founding fathers did not like the idea of a large professional standing army, fearing that it would be too tempting to get involved into mischief both domestic and foreign.
