[Leica] IMG: some interesting HDR images

Indeed Geoff the process has limitations. And also there is the highly 
subjective area of what the photographer wants to convey, as you state. 

For example,?my Emerald?Bay image has a?dark shade of green on the 
shorelines when printed, which gives it, I think, the additional shoreline 
punch you refer to. JPEG wipes that out... To?get that green plus the sky 
required more?dynamic range than my camera could record ( I believe it was 
at about 5:30am). So HDRI was worth a shot.

To contrast, your image of the Muir Woods trail is wonderful. However, there 
is no detail, on my monitor, in the tree trunks and in much to the side of 
the path. I think your image conveys a wonderful feeling the way you've 
presented it. Again we enter the subjective area.

As for muddiness in shadows,?looking at my shot from 6,000 feet above?Tahoe 
of the near trees and far mountains, I don't see a problem there. And 
shooting at 11,000 feet?at high noon and capturing, in my opinion, the 
feeling of enormity of Desolation Wilderness was an amazing thing to have 
been able to do and only through HDRI.

So I'm back where you began, my friend. It has it's place and, when 
used?judiciously, should not result in the revocation of a Photoshop license 
:-)

Hi guys I agree that this person ought to have their Photoshop licence
revoked!? Hope I'm not hijacking the thread by discussing Bob's examples.
Bob, I know you work hard at the HDR technique and these are much more
believable than other examples I have seen. I've admired these particular
ones from you before, as you know. For me I still get an impression of the
darks being 'milky' in the process without displaying much more detail. At
least in a couple of these. I'm not getting any sense of exaggeration or
artificiality here, only that they can afford to be darker, maybe half a
stop or more darker?
For example the Emerald Bay shot. Gorgeous lights and subtle colours there.
It just feels like the banks need more punch for me.
Some personal taste there obviously and I'm looking at a bunch of stuff shot
in difficult light here currently so maybe I've seared my eyes.
In this example the sun of course is specular, but I'm finding that I can
adjust the tonal curve in Raw for a very decent range.

This one maybe better for retained detail in the darks with mid-tones
lifted. Certainly the highlights are upper limit.

Agreed. That said, HDRI can be?a nice tool (photographically speaking) if
used without being over done. I've used it on?some of my images that I like:
