If I use my 3G modem outside of the UK it costs 3 GBP per megabyte - that's
approx 3,000 GBP per gig. So an 8 gig card would cost 24,000 GBP or so -
approx 26,000 Euros.

Cheaper to buy an extra card <grin>.
