The intent was to get some head shots without distractions that can be used
along with articles in the future.  In the olden days, when we used film in
TV news, we often shot 35mm "portraits" of notables with plain backgrounds
to be used when we didn't have relevant footage for a story.

Not everyone does photograph "well"    In  some cases they captured the
essence of the personality, and in some they missed the mark, maybe. I am
only familiar with a few of these people.
