They then would stamp the lens serial number on the adapter to show it was a matched set. After awhile they stopped the practice as they found that precise matching was not necessary. They were also stamped with a 5 digit code which does not correspond to the adapter catalog number. I can't verify this info in print anywhere else though. I got this info from the Leica Camera Forum in a post from a couple of years ago. If you have James Lager's Book Vol III you may find more info. (I don't).
