Interesting to hear this. I have not taken apart any of my R lenses. Do 
you know which lenses use this type of construction? That will still leave 
a whole set of older lenses that may or may not work.

The 280 f/4 APO certainly, and I believe the 100 APO and 180 APO-Elmarit as
well (I'll have to verify the 180).  Any R lens that appears to have TEN
screws holding the flange to the lens is likely to be this construction.

I do recall trying out the 180/2.8 Apo lens many years ago and noticed it 
moved only one lens element to focus. It was AF ready, I suppose.

AF-ready is my impression too.  A very light focussing action.
