The jury is out regarding M8 algorithm improvements for noise at higher ISO's. Each time a new version of the firmware is released this is up for discussion. I am not aware that Leica themselves have made any claims regarding noise reduction along the way. The combination of a Raw converter and Photoshop (or specialised plug-ins for PS) is much more powerful and flexible in every aspect than anything the camera may achieve in firmware conversion to jpeg. That is NOT a condemnation of shooting jpgs, but their advantages lie elsewhere (file size, convenience, speed). I think fair to say those are given less weighting by M8 users than perhaps by mainstream dSLR shooters. To that end Canon and Nikon have much more sophisticated processing going on, whereas Leica aims to preserve the best possible original optical information. You can see overlap of course, for example the vignette and cyan corner compensations that have emerged to address complications from the UV/IR fix. 2009/3/26 Clive Moss <Clive at moss.net> > My question about jpgs was related to Tina's comment about reduced > noise with the latest firmware.
