Some kids that do not take Ritalin are ADHD, some are not. The problem is Schools , Parents, and Doctors. Schools have 35 Kids per classroom, and more. No teaching helper. Schools complain the kid is too active/disruptive/inattentive and they can not control the kid. Parents complain the school is complaining and threatening to throw the kid out of normal school. Doctors listen to the complaints and act as the parent want: Give the kid Meds to calm him down so that the school stops complaining..... Does the kid have ADHD? Hard to tell......Usually no one who really can fully evaluate the kid and the family situation is in the loop....... So the kid gets Ritalin, and calms way down, the School stops complaining, and M+D are happy that all is calm again....... So the problem is not as simple as it first appears..... Could it be helped if the kids got out and did more exercise to get some of the normal youthful energy out of their systems? Yes Could it be helped by lower teacher to pupil ratios? Yes Could it be helped by better teacher education and patience? Yes Could it be helped by M+D not both working, and having zero patience for school complaints? Yes Could it be helped by Doctors sending out for referrals for kids that seem "active" with complaining schools and parents? Yes Could it be helped by Medical insurance that does a complete evaluation before prescribing drugs? Yes. But all that takes time and money..... and pills are cheaper and work.... So you have a lot of kids taking ADHD meds......And the "System" is happy. Frank Filippone red735i at earthlink.net
