Gerry,

You have the Tool Tips turned on.  Hit the T key to toggle it on/off,  
or use View>Metadata>Tool Tips.

I am using a 'standrad' mouse and Apple Aperture. My mouse pointer now
has a small box next to it giving me file name etc. which I find very
annoying. Can anyone please tell me how to get rid of it?
