Funny, the things that stick in your mind from the day it happened and the immediate aftermath - the Woolworth store over the road from my flat opened on a Sunday (still no Sunday opening in most of Germany) and sold fresh fruit for the first time ever, just for the visitors from "the other Germany", and the whole street smelled of 2-stroke exhaust fumes for days after. I only wish I could have been in Berlin to see it when it happened.
