I set up a lot of Apple II's and Appletalk Networks. I even set up some Lisas. The strategy was simple. Get students familiar with your platform, and you have a customer long-term. When the Mac came out I was on-board right away. I eventually left Apple and moved into integrated accounting and financial systems. That wasn't the Mac's world so I migrated to MSDos, UNIX, OS/2, Windows and many proprietary OS's. An OS is an OS. I don't have an emotional investment in any of them. Each has pros and cons. I like open architecture. Apple has always been fairly closed. The thing I miss most about my Apple days is that I could get just about any software either free or for a nominal fee. The software I use most now for imaging is Capture NX2. I hate the interface and the speed (particularly the latter), but it's the best thing out there for converting NEFs. At least it was last time I looked. I'm about ready to give Lightroom a try. I stopped upgrading my Photoshop at CS2. The student package discounts are not all that great. You can often do just about as well at an Apple (or Dell) Store. The only advantage for us was that Eric's Mac was packaged with all the software he was going to need as a music major at his University. Of couse, times change, and now, in the middle of his second year, all the music Profs accept assignments on mp3. Go figure. I work at a University too, and sometimes I can do pretty good with the discounts, sometimes not. Dell sells other stuff, besides laptops and computers, ya know. I also have a connection through IBM to Lenovo, and I was able to beat the professional discount by seventy dollars using a coupon code from Fat Wallet.
