It adds up. Sushi is a occasion food they eat may be once or twice a week. In here, sushi lovers would eat sushi everyday. Here, Americans would circle the parking lots a few times to get as close to the store door as possible. It's a rule of thumb of "immigrant tax," ex-pat gain about 10 pounds for every 10 years they live in the US, comparing to the people staying in the old country.
