Neither; IMO.
I fully understand what you're getting at;
and fully agree that the process of photography
in and of itself greatly alters "reality".

Yet within the news/documentary venues
viewer's/reader's expectations,
to whatever extent possible,
need to be respected.

A color shift, due to filtration;
printing in black & white;
and the like;
fall within viewer's expectations.
