Nothing like a picture that's outr? (though that distinction diminishes by the nanosecond) to create a controversy and sell a few more copies--and Time desperately needs additional sales these days. Every salacious magazine stunt from Life's "birth of a baby" insert in the late 1930s, to Confidential's "exposes", etc. has been justified by ostensibly educating the public about a topic of importance. In this case, the link between American involvement and horrors of extremist Islamic-justified "justice" is a bit of a stretch. The mere description of that poor lady's mutilation--covered extensively in various newspapers--was revolting enough. Perhaps Time could have just used text describing her torture as its cover, which in and of itself would have been a powerful statement.
