When I do stuff like this, it's usually from drugstore scans, if I really like the image, I save it for reference, then redo the scan high res, repeat the post process all over again, hopefully resulting in something decent enough to print to at least 12x17. It fell off the line while drying and he stepped on it...somehow it worked out. Really well. I know what you mean about filters - I always look at them at 100% (pixel size).
