Portra 160 still retains the NC and VC designations. So Kodak is slowly coming around to your way of thinking :-) Bob Adler Palo Alto, CA http://www.rgaphoto.com ________________________________ From: Mark Rabiner <mark at rabinergroup.com> To: Leica Users Group <lug at leica-users.org> Sent: Tue, December 14, 2010 10:04:17 PM Subject: Re: [Leica] de Young visit Nice shots but on the internet from scans I'm not going to go "nice film" as the scan presets you use that day has way more to do with it than any particular film you use. It has the over riding effect. We get make great scans from some pretty poor negs and upload or print an amazingly high quality looking image. I think if we have a good day on the scanner we can get great results from cheap film but if we're having a bad day next day then we get bad results from better film. By the way I always use the most expensive film I can find. And the film I tend to use is FUJICOLOR PRO 800Z or Kodak Portra 800 Both come with crispy clear cellophane wrappers and cardboard pro pack boxes. Both you get in a walk in fridge in a pro camera shot. You guys want to use our gee wiz German camera bodies with cheap film be my guest I'd rather do the opposite. But idea is put the best film in the best camera body. That would be the idea you would think. I like films with a a pdf which shows you what the edge notches are when you are feeling the sheet film in the dark. Films which come in 220. So I can get 24 on a roll of 6x6cm squares. To match what I also get with my Leica's. Films which come in long rolls and sheets and 70mm. On the Portra I don't think it makes much different NC or VC as to me as saturation control during scanning is a no brainer. And if not during scanning than a bit later during tweaking. And I don't think there is much you can do with 1600 that you can't with 800. I think the results we get with 800 films no match the results we got from 200 films 20 years ago.... The day before yesterday. When I think high rez I think 400. When I think slow film I think 160 and tripod and or studio strobe and ultra high rez.
