I visited the Bay area this week and found (among other things) a 
cooperative Green Heron:

I'd have preferred a little more eye contact but the heron turned toward me 
it was spooked by a beginning birdwatcher who followed my every move and 
stood at full height right behind me while I was doing my best to keep a low 
profile.  *sigh*
