I happened to know his manager from her position at my school, so I asked her if Schermerhorn might pose for me, explaining that I just thought he had a great face for a dramatic style picture. I was really surprised when he agreed, and even more so when he showed up at the studio already in full formal garb on a 90 degree August day. It was so nice of him to do this. We did other poses too, and I furnished him with prints, but this was my favorite. My wife Kathryn sang with Margaret Hawkin's Milwaukee Symphony Chorus for many years, and I have to add a note about the dedication of that chorus and orchestra in January of 1982. I attended a performance Kat was singing in that month when the temperature for the Saturday night concert was 26 degrees below zero F. This was the all-time lowest temperature ever recorded in Milwaukee, and more than half the seats in the hall were still filled.
