Thanks for the tips, Ric.  Camera Plus also has some kind of image
stabilization that seems to work pretty well, though it delays the snap a
bit.

Another clever app is Spy Pic, which is meant for surreptitious shooting.
 When you load it, it shows a page of literary text (classy!), but you can
vary the transparency of the page by sliding a finger over the screen until
you can make out the subject you want to photograph through the text.  The
idea is that if someone is behind you they won't know your're taking a
picture because they'll only see the page of print.  Sounds stupid (and
maybe it is) but it does work as claimed.  You can also change the decoy
screen from the essay to anything you like from a saved screenshot.  Scroll
through the decoys by side-swiping.  You can also mute the 'click' by
turning the phone to vibrate.

I'll be curious to see what iPhone photo apps look like a year from now.
I've already seen some PJ stuff from Afghanistan (Iraq?) shot with the
iPhone and the Hipstamatic app in the NYT.

Brave new world out there!
