What you are missing is that running around with a single camera on a fine travel vacation makes me quite nervous. I prefer to always carry a backup. In the digital M world, that backup would cost $2K +++ ( used M8 ) or $7K (new M9). I don't have a few "thou" hanging around to buy a backup digi-M. A backup at a few hundred would be most welcome, even if it did have a 13.75% smaller CCD sensor, and a EVF. In a broken-camera pinch, it may be a lifesaver...... BTW, as I have found less suitable ( read that as costing way too much) backup in the digi-World, I use my M6 as the backup, and carry a few rolls of film, just in case.... I find this whole backup requirement of mine to be a real pain. It is pretty specific to Leica.... let me explain.... If you are traveling in some obscure part of the world, and your Canon or Nikon ( or substitute, Sony, Minolta, or other) top of the line camera goes haywire, you COULD go to a local dealer and buy a medium or bottom of the line camera and use it for the rest of your trip.. Use the existing lenses you brought over with you. You get your pictures with only a small delay and out of pocket cost. With Leica, that breakdown of your M8 or M9 will be almost non-replaceable and if you are lucky enough to find a local dealer, the replacement cost is anywhere between $2-7K, if he has one in stock. What am I getting at? If you believe in a backup camera and you believe in Digital Leica, then you must find some form of backup solution that works for your pocketbook. For now, it is a M6 and film and a scanner for me. I wish it were not. Those professionals ( or amateurs that can afford 2 Digi-M's) out there may have a different cut on this, and I would expect so. Consider the limited budget amateur's needs..... very different.
