It seems as if the Egyptian military have an unusual relationship with the people because they aren't just an army. Due to some historical oddities, they're also a large business which sells the people a bunch of stuff - so they presumably have a strong incentive to avoid alienating the populace, and maybe even to try to ensure that the people are prosperous enough to buy what's being sold. http://www.npr.org/blogs/money/2011/02/07/133503696/the-friday-podcast-egypts-military-inc I just hope the whole odd mix of incentives, institutions and personalities ends up taking things in a good direction rather than bad. -Jeff
