Hi Ted,

The Daffodil was shot hand-held because it was too low to the ground for me
to do much with the monopod. I could have tried, but didn't, because I had
walked to the flowers to see if one had opened, and didn't really expect to
find one. The monopod was some distance away.

The Sparrow shot (if it is really a Sparrow?) was made with the monopod,
which I have been getting familiar with, and now feel more comfortable
using. I was still 45 feet from the small bird, so the crop is at full
resolution, but started out quite small.

I agree that the monopod, or a tripod, makes sense. Someone recommended
using a ball head on top of the monopod, but I have not gone that far yet.

In answer to your last question, yes, on Doug Herr's recommendation, I
sought out a Version II lens, which focuses closer and allows the camera to
be rotated with the push of a button. I have not yet tried that feature in
the field.

I appreciate your comments and suggestions. I'm almost as old as you, but
my experience is in other fields. I can use all of the suggestions that you
care to offer.
