It may be that you'll get the best sharpness at medium apertures but there are too many factors involved to say that it's due to the lens. i.e.: monopod steadiness subject motion shutter speed focussing accuracy combine all these with your existing technique and you may find an optimum but you might find a better optimum if you can improve one or several of these factors by refining your technique.
