This is actually not a Civil War impression, but an Indian war 
impression.  He is portraying a member of the 10th US Cavalry which was 
formed in 1866 and served on the western plains.  The 10th Cav. was an 
African-American unit and was one of the original "Buffalo Soldier" units.
