They are also a true long focus lens, not telephoto so are about 800mm long. This one has a triplet of very large size (f/6.3) with exotic glasses; not easy to make, use (or sell :-)). As for the quality of the 400 and 560 f/6.8's vs. newer lens, the newer lenses will win in general. A new AF300/2.8 Nikkor with 2x teleconverter will probably have more even performance, but won't be better in the center than the 560. The 300 alone will be a noticeable amount better than the older lenses. If you don't practice a lot with the slide focussing, autofocus will definitely give you more useable shots of animals out in the open. In the bush, autofocus is a pain and really doesn't work. >While looking at the 560's, I ran into the 800mm. Born sometime in the >70's and still asking over $8500 :-) The modern 800 looks reasonably >priced at 13k. > >Cheers > >Alastair > >> Well, I own the 560/6.8 Telyt, but would love to have the Modular 560/5.6 >> if I could afford one (faster/easier focussing and a more modern design), >> which I cannot. ;-) >> >> Gene >> >> ----- Original Message ----- >> From: afirkin at afirkin.com >> To: "Leica Users Group" <lug at leica-users.org> >> Sent: Sunday, April 24, 2011 8:39:46 PM GMT -06:00 US/Canada Central >> Subject: [Leica] 560MM leica lens >> >> Which would you choose: >> the modular system 560mm f5.6 or >> the longer 560mm f6.8? >> >> Any comments >> >> Alastair >> -- Henning J.
