Dennis, if you start with a recent camera and stay within the constraints of
the camera system (i.e. don't push the ISO too much), then there should be
enough "bits" for you to do quite a bit of tweaking before it gets
noticeable, if you are careful about it. Using RAW will help a lot in that
aspect too.
