Well, that's part of it I am sure, but of course small shops were falling 
victims to Walmart and its ilk long before the current recession. This trend 
can be checked if the local authorities have the balls to engage in serious 
town planning.

Well, it all depends on what you call serious; they decided to prohibit such 
stores in the town centers here some years ago - the result of which is that 
people take they cars to get out of town and go shopping. Of course, small 
shops still suffer badly. I see only one possibility to reverse the trend 
now, here at least: increasing the price of gas a couple of times. It will 
be good for the planet, and excellent for people's health due to renewing 
with daily basic exercise. Not to speak about the elderly who will find a 
sense of the community again when they queue for bread in their berets and 
checkered slippers.

Philippe, after a day's frantically hopping from mall to mall to get what 
was needed for a long weekend, exhausting and so insane of us all.
