If you can't find a LS5000 at an acceptable price the LS4000 might be an 
acceptable and cheaper alternative.
I have that model which I control with Silverfast to my Mac and the results 
are very good. Here is a sample scan
of an extachrome slide taken in North China in 1976.

Black and white scans equally well.
