He's proably using the sensor off the flash which the closer it is to the
subject the less power and the shorter duration it needs.
Real close a few feet away and it  could be way less in effect than a 16th
power. With fast film at least. That and he could be shooting at f11 or f16.
A coiled TLR cord can be a very powerful tool even if its not TTL.
