I was told at the time direct from the Leica plant in Midland, Ontario , Canada where it was designed. Through the main office in Toronto, Ontario at the time! I got it because I believe capturing what you see with your naked eye! No flash!!! Never with a Leica camera at any time! Oh people bounce it! But with a Noctilux? If you can see it...... "YOU CAN SHOOT IT AS SEEN!" And at ASA1600 or way slower! :-) it allows you to capture some very cool scenes and situations. I can never understand why some people who buy an f1.0 lens, then complain about what it does or doesn't do at f8.0 or other apertures. Let's be realistic for a moment? One buys an f1.0 lens for an incredible amount of money. Then they stop it down to f8.0 or f11.0? Then complain about recording performance? These people either are brain dead or have way way too much money! Buy an f1,0 Leica Noctilux you develop and learn the skills of shooting subjects at f1.0! No you don't shoot every image at that aperture! But every opportunity you have.......... 99.9% of the time you work at f1.0! If not?? What the hell did you buy the lens for in the first place? On my lens there were two little pins holding the spring loaded lens shade in place. Eventually one pin fell out. Not that I'm a big lens shade person, I did send it in for a pin replacement. It never happened as it would've cost a fortune! I threw the shade in the cabinet and for some 30 plus years now the Noctilux has never had a lens shade on at any time ! The glass is pristine, I use the Nocti when the situation calls for it's use. Lots and lots of times as I'm a great believer in "if you can see it? You just shoot it!" The Noctilux is the wunderkind for this doing your thing at f 1.0! :-) I don't know anything about other versions....... never knew there were and didn't care as mine is a dream machine at image capture. On the M8? I didn't know you couldn't do what some others have said it wouldn't do? Something or other about focus? Me? I just focus and the image looks cool! And that my friend is my way of shooting. Techie stuff? don't have a clue. Looks good on the screen? Even better in print! :-) At least 13X19 size! OK 12X18 on 13-19 paper! :-) I'll finish with! If you purchase a Noctilux and use it regularly you will be one of the great happy camper Leica users! Tina and a few others of us will welcome you into becoming a "Knight of the Night Shooters"!! ;-) cheers, Dr ted :-)
