Hi Bill,
I think it is great that the monopod worked well for you in your jeep. But 
for me, my mileage varied.
Jeeps in India have a roll bar in the back which you can hang on to when 
standing and putting a bean
bag on that bar and standing up to take photos gave me a clearer vantage 
point and a freedom to pan and
swivel that I didn't get with my tripod when I was using it as a monopod. In 
Africa the jeeps we
used had push up tops so you were naturally standing and leaning on the edge 
of the side of the jeep.
It was a perfect spot for a bean bag with the same facility of movement as 
using the roll bar in India.
So, I'm sold on bean bags - but I recognize in that spirit  of YMMV - other 
methods work well for others too.
