I found a nicely typed document: Bridges of the Upper Tombigbee River Valley Historic American Engineering Record National Park Service Department of Interior Washington, D.C. It gives more than 100 pages of information on bridges over the years, and the reasons and politics behind them, especially during the Reconstruction years in North Mississippi. The James Creek bridge was built primarily because there was a stagecoach line that made regular trips north from Columbus, MS to the upper reaches of the state near the Tennessee River. This stage had to pass over James Creek. While the bridge was probably rebuilt over the years, it is interesting to read the following quote. "The bridge on the Columbus-Aberdeen road over James creek cost $500 in 1844; the covering cost an additional $345 in 1849."
