Regardless I think the shoot wide open ethic is way over used. Its an effect which his its very limited usages. The people I knew called it "a selective focus shot" which is not a good phrase for it as its vague. Macro photography is hard. Dying is easy. Macro photography is for sure not about shooting wide open. Its about stopping down as much as you can with the hope that maybe you'll get the needed information sharp. And sure if you have a fast lens you need to be able to use it wide open or there's no point. I just don't think macro shots are that point. Right now I'd kill for a 50 1.4 I can use. 1.8 seems kind of run of the mill.
