He does capture an atmosphere that was genuinely there. Yes, there we do see through an overtone of nostalgia, but parts of Paris really were like that. I remember going there in '67 for the first time (I think);it was much like he depicts, and thinking "is this what all the fuss is about?". Nonetheless... France, let alone Paris, is a very different place today but if you know where to look...
