Interesting progression, Richard. Practice to be unpolished.

The first character, for wood, is clear in your first (more 'carved')
attempt, but in the second and third I see the Japanese hiragana for 'o'
(omitting the 'ten' mark to the right). Just an observation. For all I
know, the 'o' hiragana might be derived from a fast way of writing the
'wood/tree' character.

My wife went to weekly calligraphy classes until she was about 34, and
preparing for our baby. I know adults who are still learning flower
arrangement, haiku, and so on from their sensei after decades of weekly
instruction. I can't think of anything comparable in western culture. Apart
from maybe churchgoers who still learn from their pastor or spiritual guide
after decades.
