A bit more research revealed that there is a way to manually adjust the 
frame line brightness in the X Pro-1, so daylight use of the OVF should be 
possible.

With the OVF selected press the Q button and adjust the viewfinder 
brightness (lower right hand corner tile) with the thumb wheel.
