The sharpness at 1.8 is very good, perhaps the sharpest "fast" VC lens I've ever used. Much better detail and sharpness over the 50/1.1 or 35/1.2 VII (which I've tried and can't stand). The 35/1.4 falls into a different category IMO since it's an older design and I think is supposed to be soft wide open. Yes, it was an M9P converted to BW in LR. Distortion for a 21mm is very minimal.
