For some time I read that the inspiration for the Dr. Strangelove character
was Henry Kissinger, but I believe it was a physicist from Germany who lost
his hands in a reactor incident in their WWII bomb program.  Can't recall
his name, but I remember reading that after his immigration to the U.S. he
would entertain people at cocktail parties by walking around with a martini
balanced on one of his prosthetic hands (with a black glove).  I think that
was in Sylvia Nasar's book on John Nash, "A Beautiful Mind", but not sure.
