To answer your specific question, the original conversion to B&W would have been done in LR4, and I am now using LR5. I have now spotted that LR5 has set the saturation slider on the affected images to -100 and the colour balance to 12000. Why this has happened is totally beyond me, and it has only happened to maybe 20 or 30 images out of 1300+ in that particular folder. Now I know the cause it is quite easy to rectify, and I can only assume it is a bug which I will report. The interesting thins is that if I double-click on the saturation slider to reset it then it resets to -100. The colour balance is easy to rest to 'As Shot' or any other setting. Major panic now over, but still difficult to understand. Thanks again!
