I did a search, and found that bumble bees have a gold, fuzzy butt, while carpenter bees have a shiny black butt. There are also bee imposters that have a single pair of wings. This large bee appears to be a carpenter bee. I am adding another image that shows other details. Side view of mis-identified bumble bee, which is actually a carpenter bee. http://zone-10.com/tope2/main.php?g2_itemId=7038 I learn every day how little I really know! Jim Nichols Tullahoma, TN USA
