I've maintained a Wacom tablet as part of my system since they first became available. I've used them mostly for "illustration" purposes. Using a tablet and pen for "photo retouching" really depends on: 1) your comfort level and expertise with traditional art media, pencils, pens, brushes etc. 2) the type of "retouching" you intend to do. 3) hand eye coordination level Most "photo retouching" tasks can be handled with a good "mouse" I'd ask, "are you experiencing a task that the mouse fails to perform adequately?" As far as model recommendations - whatever is current and no smaller than 6" x 8" I'm not currently using the latest and greatest - though it still performs everything I need it to do.
