I've maintained a Wacom tablet as part of my system since they first became 
available.
I've used them mostly for "illustration" purposes.

Using a tablet and pen for "photo retouching" really depends on:

1) your comfort level and expertise with traditional art media, pencils, 
pens, brushes etc.
2) the type of "retouching" you intend to do.
3) hand eye coordination level

Most "photo retouching" tasks can be handled with a good "mouse"
I'd ask, "are you experiencing a task that the mouse fails to perform 
adequately?"

As far as model recommendations - whatever is current and no smaller than 6" 
x 8"

I'm not currently using the latest and greatest - though it still performs 
everything I need it to do.
