Hi JIm,
If you go to the third folder, fifth item in the shooting menu in your XE 1
you can select framing guideline and bring up 9 Grid, 24 Grid, or HD framing.
These work in manual mode both on the rear screen and in the EVF.

I upgraded the Fuji camera and lens firmware to the latest versions.  In 
bright light, I could see little change in ease of focusing a manual 
lens.  The only downside I noticed was that the 3 x 3 grid I was using 
to aid in framing is no longer available.
