Bill - - - Basically the Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox. It rises soon after sunset. It is no bigger than most other full moons but it is definitely tinted orange. This is a true physical effect not an optical illusion. The passage of light through the thicker layer of atmosphere scatters the blue light leaving only the reddish portion of the spectrum. It makes a wonderful effect for photographers wishing to shoot a spooky Halloween scene Larry Z
