My wife and children (especially our son) really took to skiing when we lived in Switzerland 2000-2003; after all, there is nothing else to do there in the winter, and you are deported if you do not try to learn to ski within the first year of arriving there ;-) I did try to learn it but was totally, utterly hopeless at it. The first winter I took lessons and really tried but I hated every minute of it. The second winter was a wash because I had knee surgery that November. And the third winter I was looking for jobs, having been laid off from Swiss Re, and so had other things on my mind than skiing. Later, I worked for a company that had an annual management getaway to Val d'Isere, a week spent in a luxury chalet, skiing during the day, eating and drinking (oh yes, and discussing strategy just enough to make it a business outing) at night. I tried snowboarding, figuring that it might be easier since both your legs are on one board and so will not try to go in different direction (my main issue with skiing). But I quickly discovered that snowboarding has its own issues and I permanently gave up on all winter sports. I can ride a snow motorcycle (skidoo). That's it. Now that we live in Spain, my wife goes skiing in Sierra Nevada 3-4 times a year, and to Andorra once a year.
