To use it, you press and release (don't hold it) the EV button on the front right and then turn the wheel on the back top right. It goes to 5x magnification then 10x magnification, but only what's in the middle of the viewfinder. There is a setting to have the last X magnification come up when you just turn the lens focus which is even more disorienting. I find neither useful, really, other than to get close. Like you, adjusting the diopter on the EVF to work with my eye and then judging focus from there really works well!
