As for old American cars; yes, they are overlarge and floaty but that didn't matter in America before the 70's, for the most part. Wide open spaces with a lot of straight but rather lumpy roads and cheap gas. One 'floated' right over everything, and when it came time to change direction one had a lot of warning. High speeds except for drag racing weren't allowed nor reasonable. Style was important. My personal preference was also always for a smaller, more nimble and better handling car. To counter that, my first new car was a Beetle. At least it was practical.
