It's the end result that matters, however it's delivered. Software correction for distortion, vignetting, and lateral chromatic aberration gives more degrees of freedom in the optical design, allowing for smaller and/or better performing lenses at a lower cost. When the world went AF, a lot of newer "zoom" lenses were really vari-focal lenses, where refocussing was necessary when you change the focal length. Having said that, I really missed my Leica when I was taking pictures of my daughter dancing on stage. The rangefinder focussing is so much more accurate and predictable.
