I guess Aperture was not doing well in the marketplace, and I suspect most people want simple functionality, synchronization across devices etc. They certainly do not care about layers, masks and whatnot. This does not affect me in any way, as I have been a Lightroom user since it first came out, and I see absolutely no reason to contemplate anything else.
