The 2x requires you to stop down a couple of stops for best sharpness, and with your 80 ~ 400 you are already at 5.6 to start with therefore the 2x is not a good choice. With my 400/2.8 it works fairly well. The new 1.4 is supposed to be even better than the current one. Getting closer is always an option but my hummers are a skittish lot - still worth a try. About extenders; the 2X is too soft - the 1.7X is just marginally acceptable - and I don't (yet) have a 1.4X which by reports is quite good. This is on the 80 - 400 VR zoom which by itself is very good. All food for thought. As for cropping, you just have to get closer, or use a tele-extender. ;) Gene _______________________________________________ Leica Users Group.
