But surely the sensor can ony sense the image projected upon it, rubbish in: 
rubbish out. Early sensors had lower resolution than even modest lenses. The 
latest ones have higher resolution than most lenses, hence the lens will 
make a bigget difference, relative to the sensor, than it did 10 years ago.
